The only limitation I'm aware of in the ndiswrapper driver is that it can lock your system up if you use SMP or Hyperthreading...for some reason it doesn't play nice with those =) But other than that, it works like a charm...and since the performance increases on a Hyperthreaded machine are debatable, you're not giving THAT much up for a free solution to the problem ^_^

using linuxant here, has anybody solved the problem of having negative numbers for signal quality, e.g.

I can't get this to work on my laptop (HP ZE4610). I think the problem is in the PCI subsystem. Consider:
harvey root # lspci
pcilib: Cannot open /proc/bus/pci/02/00.0
Unable to read 64 bytes of configuration space.
harvey root # lspci -H1
02:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM94306 802.11g (rev 03)
harvey root #

As a result, driverload just gives up:
harvey root # modprobe driverloader
Warning: loading /lib/modules/2.4.25-gentoo/misc/driverloader.o will taint the kernel: non-GPL license - see LICENSE file; Copyright (c)2003-2004 Linuxant inc.
See for information about tainted modules
/lib/modules/2.4.25-gentoo/misc/driverloader.o: init_module: No such device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
/lib/modules/2.4.25-gentoo/misc/driverloader.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.25-gentoo/misc/driverloader.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.25-gentoo/misc/driverloader.o: insmod driverloader failed

I've built my kernel with "direct" PCI access but no joy. Any suggestions?
[EDIT] Upgrading to 2.6.3 fixed this for me.

Hi there,

I've gotten to about step 5 of these directions, but I think I've hit a fairly obvious wall...

My problem is that I have no desktop installed and I'm still running Gentoo from a shell. It seems that to install a desktop, my machine keeps trying to hit the internet, which of course it can't, because my network card (WMP11) isn't working yet...

So can anyone tell me if I can install a desktop from somewhere else (like the live CD)? I can't get to the configuration step without a browser from what I've been reading, so I'm more or less stuck here...

And do I need to download the Windows drivers from Linuxant as well?

I'm running kernel 2.4.24, which I installed from stage 3 from a Live CD

If I type "lspci" I get this regarding my wireless Linksys WMP11 PCI card:

Network Controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4301 802.11b (rev 01)

I've emerged wireless-tools

When I type
I only get "lo"

When I type
I get "lo no wireless extension"

Thank you!
