Hi there,

I just finished my 10th stage 1 installation and I added a normal user to the wheel group as usual in order to su. But ...

Code:

$ su

Quote:

You are not authorized to su root

Why so? I don´t understand.

Cheers,

Robert

you proboably need to be in the root group as well to su to root. I believe that's the default for shadow only install. (is on my system(s) at least)

No, a user in the wheel can su to root in the normal install. Did you check out the sticky topic at the top of the forum?

This worked. Thanks.

One other thing: when I try to

Code:

# emerge xorg-x11

I get:

Quote:

Connecting failed. Address family not supported by protocol.

Never had this before. And I do have a working internet connection.

Cheers,

Robert

i'm not talking about a standard install. I was talking about a PAM free install. And with the *default* login.defs you need to be in root group to su to wheel, this is proven by:

Code:

# If "yes", the user must be listed as a member of the first gid 0 group
# in /etc/group (called "root" on most Linux systems) to be able to "su"
# to uid 0 accounts.  If the group doesn't exist or is empty, no one
# will be able to "su" to uid 0.
#
SU_WHEEL_ONLY   yes

aaand from /etc/group

Code:

root:x:0:root,nard

this is also proven by my own experience.

..just to clarify.

Oh, well, this just shows how so many of us have PAM-enabled systems that we have no idea what's the situation like "back in the old days", with only shadow passwords. :P
