I have a G4 imac that stopped booting properly. It would not boot to safe mode, but would boot to single user. I booted with the Gentoo live CD and was happy to see that I could mount the drive and apparently see all the data. I had to wait a few days to get a location to do a back up, and during that time read that I could use Mac's install disks to do an archive install, so I decided to try that. During that process, the Mac install disk claimed that I had no usable partitions. I thought that was odd, since I had just seen that the disk looked fine in Gentoo. I re-booted from the live CD, and now no longer had the block special devices /dev/hda2 and /dev/hda3. (Originally, there were /dev/hda{1,2,3}) Naturally, /dev/hda3 is where all of my data is. I cannot mount /dev/hda1 using 'mount -t hfsplus /dev/hda1 /mnt/foo', which is how I had originally mounted /dev/hda3, and I can no longer boot to single user mode.

parted is sort of helpful, as it recognizes minor devices 1 and 3, but when I try 'check 1' or 'check 3', it throws an error. ( I didn't write it down, but the error message was something like 'no filesystem') When I try to mount /dev/hda1, the error I get is 'Neither wrapper nor native hfs+ volume header foune (unknown error 4294967295). /dev/hda1 is a link to /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part1, so I tried to make /dev/hda3 with 'mknod part3 b 3 3' (run from /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0) but subsequent attempts to mount that device said '/dev/ide.../lun0/part3 doesn't exist'

Did I do something to cause further damage? or is this indicative of hardware failure? How do I repair the filesystem?
