The problem is that when i try to get the ksmserver this happens

bash-2.05b# emerge ksmserver
Calculating dependencies ...done!

!!! Error: the =kde-base/kdebase-3.4* package conflicts with another package.
!!! both can't be installed on the same system together.
!!! Please use 'emerge --pretend' to determine blockers.

note::probually somthing dumb

I have got
kde version 3.4.1
kdebase version 3.4.1-r1

that is the problem right there but how would i get kde to save sessions without that what else could i use i cant find much about that

reading the error message, can you post the result of:
Code:
emerge --pretend ksmserver

bash-2.05b# emerge --pretend ksmserver

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[blocks B ] =kde-base/kdebase-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/ksmserver-3.4.1)
[ebuild N ] kde-base/ksmserver-3.4.1
bash-2.05b#

bash-2.05b# emerge kdesdk

Calculating dependencies ...done!

!!! Error: the =kde-base/cervisia-3.4* package conflicts with another package.
!!! both can't be installed on the same system together.
!!! Please use 'emerge --pretend' to determine blockers.

bash-2.05b# emerge --pretend kdesdk

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[blocks B ] =kde-base/cervisia-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/kdesdk-3.4.1)
[ebuild N ] media-libs/gd-2.0.32
[ebuild N ] media-gfx/graphviz-1.16
[ebuild N ] dev-util/valgrind-2.4.0
[ebuild N ] dev-util/callgrind-0.9.11-r1
[ebuild N ] kde-base/kdesdk-3.4.1

I have this in another place also but noone seems to be looking at it and i need it solved besides i dont think it should be under desktop i think it has somthing to do with my portage

here is the old topic
[url]
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-2643256.html#2643256
[/url]

The problem is basicly that alot of the packages that i try to emerge have an error and when i pretend it says that so and so is blocking what ever what do i do

some examples are
[blocks B ] =kde-base/kdebase-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/ksmserver-3.4.1)
[blocks B ] =kde-base/cervisia-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/kdesdk-3.4.1)

i have come across some more but they arnt as important as these

How do i fix this??????

Merged a totally unnecessary thread with this one.

centrex8j, you'd better practice your patience. Posted new threads all of the forums if people don't respond fast enough to your liking won't be tolerated for long. And if you want something moved, just ask in the Reporting thread in the Gentoo Feedback forum ok? No need to create a new thread.

i admit my bad on that one

but nobody was looking at my post because it was way down on the list and it already had posts so i thought i would copy evreyone else and add unsolved in the subject a day went past and it didnt work so im fed up at this point 2 and 1/2 days in still nothing as simple as "only way is to uninstall the blocking packages" how hard is that ?

Question
if i get it moved will it be on the top of the list or can i just skip that and say hey i need this up here so people will look at it???

Back to subject

The problem is you are trying to combine (where they can't be) the split KDE ebuilds and the regular ones. kdebase is monolithic, while the other ones aren't. You need to choose which you want (there's plenty of resources to help).

If a kdepackage is "blocked" by "kdebase"
that is because kdebase installs that program.
If you are trying to install kdm, and you have kdebase installed
kdm is already installed. just change the rc.conf setting from xdm to kdm and check.

Now this isnt always true, but as monkey89 said, there are kde "split ebuilds" where some people may not want to have EVERYTHING from kde-base. so the pick and choose. For the general user, installing kde-base is standard, and it includes kdm.

*note* this blocking situation can occur for different reasons, this is specific to the "kde split ebuild" case.
