A personal question, I know, but how regularly do you do it? I mean, how often do you emerge --sync or eix-sync? I do it every day. :P

If you use a cron job to sync, you can use MAILTO: whatever - I have seen numerous examples in the forums of this, just couldnt find one at the moment.

Once a day (or more frequently)

Just did a new install a week or two ago (to easily get rid of 3 DE's and about 15 WM's) so I'm in the mood to keep everything bleeding-edge. It'll drop down to once a week or so soon. :)

BAD IDEA!
Syncing more than once a day is against the usage policy of the gentoo mirrors and can eventually get you bocked from servers.
This is damaging to Gentoo. It is also completely unnecessary.

To answer the OP: I sync not more than twice a week, and emerge -up world anytime I feel like it.

thats it exactly... I usually work from home and connect to a laptop at work. Each morning, on the work laptop, I sync up and then email myself my IP address and any updates (basically the output from emerge -uDvp world)

I do it once a day... I just copied the poll option I selected. :P

Also, like I said, this is only a habit that lasts 2 or so weeks after a new install.

i didn't realise that syncing once a day was frowned on. i recall a warning about syncing more often than this (either in the handbook, or perhaps in the messages during the sync itself...i can't remember) but i took it literally (i.e. more than once a day = bad, once a day = ok). perhaps it needs to state more clearly what a reasonable frequency is.

i admit to having occasionally done two syncs in a single day when i've updated a system, borked it somehow, and restored from (an out-of-date) backup. normally though, it's been once a day, missing a day or two here and there. i'll change that to once every few days.

long ago i allowed weeks (possibly months) to go by without syncing, and won't make that mistake again. a daily emerge -uD world takes maybe five minutes and perhaps a quick glance at etc-update: leaving it for months turns it into a major event, almost like a re-install.

AFAIK, once a day is fine.

About once a month or so, I'd like to do so more frequently but it takes a good 10-12 minutes to finally update the cache after its all downloaded.

I sync my server every night (cron job), and my desktop whenever I reboot or install stuff (if it's been more than 6 hours or so since my last sync).

This has been covered enough times that a FAQ was written on the subject (see the FAQ Forum)
