Curiosity...
Perhaps this is a naive response, but isnt an ibook a laptop? Why would you need/want xinerama on a computer with only one screen? |

TV out or to watch a movie on a plasma screen (edit: or anything else you like)
#Gsus: Have you tried google? or searching here?
Link below gives some info;
If you have an ATI card then I expect yes, but using mergefb not xinerama.
If you have Nvidia then probably not .. _________________ Tyan Tiger K8W, 2xOpteron 240,Powerbook5,6 15" 1.5g, Macbook Black 2g, Mac Mini 1g, Ipod P60g.

I've only sceen xinerama for say using two video card to stitch the screen together. To make one LARGE VIRTUAL SCREEN. So using xinerama w/ tvout would put 1/2 the screen on the tv and 1/2 on your laptop.
"Xinerama extension provides a mechanism for a multi-headed system to function as one large screen"
To watch a movie from my laptop onto a screen I wouldnt use xinerama because I have an nvidia card
With nvidia I use
Option "TwinView" "1"
Or make you can execute X, on a different display (vt8) with the screen definition on the tvout
I could definitly be wrong, but from my experiance with my one laptop, I did not use xinerama to use the tvout.
I have another experiance with a dualoutput nvidia, and that also does not use xinerama. |

Interesting response.
So what do you suggest to allow my 23¨ cinema display to be part of my powerbook lcd (with an ATI card), as one desktop? _________________ Tyan Tiger K8W, 2xOpteron 240,Powerbook5,6 15" 1.5g, Macbook Black 2g, Mac Mini 1g, Ipod P60g.

giving you the benefit of the doubt, that you simply didnt read

to answer your question, I would use xinerama, to do anything "as one desktop" (though i am not familiar with ati cards
but for watching a movie, why do you need one large virtual screen? why not simply put it on a separate screen?

Are you actually helping the poster or simply trying to make some obscure point? What exactly was your point again?
For me xinerama/mergefb gives the flexibility to arrange multiple screens as required. Big desktop, work on one, play a movie on another, whether tv or lcd, thats it, that seems to be what the poster wants?
What was your point again? _________________ Tyan Tiger K8W, 2xOpteron 240,Powerbook5,6 15" 1.5g, Macbook Black 2g, Mac Mini 1g, Ipod P60g.

My point is that: I thought You only need xinerama to paste multiple screen together into one large virtual screen.
In addition to that some video drivers provide for this w/o xinerama
If your intention is to simply utilize the video out, you might not need xinerama at all, depending on what you really want todo.
In your common example. watching a movie, you do not need xinerema in my limited experiance, You can simply use the tv-out separate from the monitor out. |

Hallo
sorry for my late reply
I founded the site but I had a newer Ibook with a other Radeon. So I read that with the new one it were not possible. The same problem I have with the direct rendering.
so if you heared something else ... I'll try it again.
so long

You didn´t give us any hardware details so I was guessing a little.
The new R300 driver is working perfectly on my Powerbook 5,6 with an ATI card with mergefb for the video out.
Its worth seeing if that driver will support your card.
Also its easier if you use modular xorg7 with mesa and x11-drm from portage. _________________ Tyan Tiger K8W, 2xOpteron 240,Powerbook5,6 15" 1.5g, Macbook Black 2g, Mac Mini 1g, Ipod P60g.
