I had the same error. The only solution for me, was to install the masked version (/maxima-5.9.1-r1).

i cannot start xmaxima:
Code:
# xmaxima
Application initialization failed: this isn't a Tk applicationunknown color name "Black"
Error in startup script: can't invoke "winfo" command:  application has been destroyed
    while executing
"winfo screenvisual ."
    (file "/usr/bin/xmaxima" line 1)

any ideas? i'm using sci-mathematics/maxima-5.9.1 with +tetex only.

i have exactly the same problem (as BlinkEye) ... so: did you solve this? and, of yes, how?

there are man-pages for winfo in the internet, so i suppose, it's just a normal program and should be in /usr/bin. if i understood it correctly, its part of dev-lang/tk (and i have installed tk-8.4.9 which seems to be the newest version)

does anyone have any ideas?

my problem is solved now though i didn't change anything specific (just rebooted several times and changed other things, that shouldn't affect neither maxima nor tk). xmaxima works fine; even though there is still no winfo.

On x86 maxima-5.10.0 [~ppc] builds fine, on ppc not, it just hangs with this last message:
Code:

I tried also with G3 profile defaults.
Useflags are as follows:
Code:
# emerge -auNDtv maxima

These are the packages that would be merged, in reverse order:

The stable maxima-5.9.1 [ppc] fails like this:

That seems to be ppc specific, copied to Gentoo on PPC -> sci-mathematics/maxima: emerge fails
