Hi,

as far as I know you can't install from the LiveDVD in the sense that there is an installer - the Gentoo Installer was abandoned some time ago. You can, however, use the LiveDVD to have a nice graphical environment out of which you can then install Gentoo.
How this is done is explained in detail and step by step in the Gentoo Handbook.

As for the root password - I think you don't need one. Try pressing strg + alt + f1 and you should be in a textmode environment with some informational text.

Hope this helps.

There is no Gentoo installer :( This was abandoned in 2009.

The only way to install Gentoo is through the CLI

But you CAN use the LiveDVD for that :!:

On a more serious note:
The hardest part when installing Gentoo is getting the Kernel configured, imo. You can do this quite easily with the genkernel script (emerge genkernel) or by booting up the livecd, following the handbook I mentioned above, proceed to "configuring the kernel" and do a
Code:
make localmodconfig
make && make modules_install

and again follow the handbook after that.

You really have to work from the Gentoo installation handbook; start at the
beginning (it's pretty detailed) and go on until you get stuck. Then ask for
help here, saying where you've got to in the handbook, and what happened.

There is no installer. Make sure you have at least 512MB of ram for booting the livedvd. Follow the handbook to install Gentoo.

@IAMLEGENDZ just type 'sudo su' in a terminal window inside the desktop environment, no need to jump to vt1 as Clad in Sky pointed out.

I'm working on an install document so you can install from the LiveDVD.
However, you will still need to do the hard bits yourself.

The incomplete document is here
I won't get to do any more to it until the weekend. As I write, its doing
Code:
emerge -eavK1 @word
which is installing 1602 binary packages. A few have failed already.

Its still full of "notes to self" about things that don't work.

There *is* a Gentoo Installer. Go into the bathroom and look in the mirror.
You are looking at the installer.

Thanks first.
I tried, and with another problem:
Code:
network interface eth0 does not exist

I rebuild my kernel, but it didn't work. And
Code:
#lspci
Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. Device 4381 (rev 11)

I searched the net, but it seems there is no proper driver for my net card.

you have the same card as me :)

soliton,

You messed up your kernel install then. Or you are not running the kernel you think your are.

Run
Code:
uname -a
and look at the date/time
Code:
 $ uname -a
Linux NeddySeagoon 2.6.37-gentoo #2 SMP PREEMPT Thu Jan 13 18:18:00 GMT 2011 x86_64 AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1090T Processor AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux

Thu Jan 13 18:18:00 GMT 2011 is the build time of my running kernel.

Check yours against the time you remember building the kernel.

Also, what does
Code:
 ifconfig -a
show now ?

There is no default anymore for root, there never was and the password for user gentoo is 'gentoo-11'
To gain root access you just need to type 'sudo su'
