hi,
I install gentoo by usb, cause my laptop doesn't have cd-rom.

I create usb installer with latest x86 minimal cd by ultraiso, then reboot the laptop from usb

then typing "gentoo doscsi", then the kernel starts, but when it trys to mount the disk partition(win7 exists on my laptop). It stucks!

my disk partition is:
/dev/sda1 100M win7 reserved
/dev/sda2 30G win7 system
/dev/sda3 -- extended partition
/dev/sda5 D D disk partition
/dev/sda6 E the partition used to install gentoo

Installer stuck with the follewing logs( i don't remember the exact log):
mounting /dev/sda1
mounting /dev/sda2
mounting /dev/sda3 ------> it seems that installer is trying to mount extended partition!

does anyone know the anwser?

@ligang, Welcome to Gentoo. :)

The minimal install CD doesn't mount any partitions on your hard drive. What's the exact name of the ISO that you set up on your USB stick?

ligang,

Welcome to Gentoo.

You are the Gentoo installer. The CD just provides a few tools that you need - none of it goes into the install.
A side effect of this is that you can use any Linux bootable media to install Gentoo. You must have a 64 bit kernel to do a 64 bit install. Thats about the only limitation.

When you boot the minimalCD, it does indeed try to scan every partition it finds but it knows that the extemded parttion is not mountable and passes on.
It only mounts the squashfs that is in a file on the CD, as its root filesystem and fakes a writable root by using Unioinfs, so write go to RAM.

--- Changelog ---

Changed the word mount to scan and added a few words about how the CD works.
With Thanks to John R. Graham for gently slapping my wrist.

hi, thanks for the replying :)

I just found someone met the same problem, and I also use the same minimal cd(install-x86-minimal-20120710.iso)(https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-943340.html)

but the difference is that I failed to create usb pen by unetbootin tools, so I have to use ultrsiso;
I will try other distro live-cd :D

ligang,

if you want you can try the System Rescue CD, which is based on Gentoo, and has worked well for me several times in the past.
