Hi, ALL.
I'm trying to install Gentoo on my workplace server.

Since my colleagues wanted me to try Fedora or Ubuntu, I tried Fedora first. I bought USB stick dropped the image there and tried latest - Fedora 18. It failed twice on GRUB installation with the same python error.
Then I formatted this stick in Windows and dropped gentoo-amd64 image on it.
Trying to boot the image I see that it starts booting recognizing all hardware, asking for keyboard layout, starts the OpenRC process and then after some time throws an error, clear the screen and ask for a login.

All I did was to hit enter at the "boot:" prompt.

And I wasn't able to catch the error - PC is much faster than me unfortunately. ;-)

So what do I do at this stage? I can't ssh to the machine to check on the error and I'm not fast enough to stop it from clearing the screen.

Is there an option I can select in order to see the error?

Or maybe I'm barking at the wrong tree and Gentoo will fail as Fedora?

Thank you for any hints/points.

Jaglover,
Yup. This is "machine @ work" and all other was "machine @ home". Don't you know you can't mix those 2? ;-)

Thank you.

P.S.: It's not CD, it's a USB stick...

What did you use to put the Gentoo image on the USB stick?

I can only guess but maybe the cd is unable to load the driver for a particular piece of hardware. Maybe try the sysrescue cd but with almost 200 posts on here I'm a but surprised something like this would be catching you out.

swathe,
Actually, I might do just that.

Problem is I tried to do it all at work and my own working machine does not have CD/DVD drive. So I put everything on the thumb drive.
And probably Fedora erroring out should've stopped me right away, but I didn't listen... ;-)

Now I am at home and will just make a DVD like "normal" people do... ;-)

Anyway thank you for the reply.

Hi, guys,
This morning I came to work with the freshly burned RescueCD.
I did the install with it and it went without any major issues. I just wasn't able to do "mkswap" and "swapon".

When the system rebooted I saw following on the screen.

Code:

* Failed to update the dependency tree
* Failed to load deptree
mkdir `/run/openrc/failed`: No such file or directory
mkdir `/run/openrc/wasinactive`: No such file or directory
.......
Many other "/run/openrc/ stuff failing
* Caching service dependencies
fopen `/run/openrc/deptree`: No such file or directory
fopen `/run/openrc/depconfig`: No such file or directory
* Failed to update the dependency tree
* Failed to load deptree
INIT: Entering runlevel: 3
<The same stuff follows

In the end there is a "login" prompt, but system is unusable.

Did I screw up the kernel configuration? or something else going on?

Thank you.

P.S.: /etc/fstab contains records only for /boot, swap, / and cdrom. No shm, tmpfs or any other fs is there.

I also added proc and tempfs to fstab but it didn't fix the install...

Thank you.

DONAHUE,
I guess you are right. Didn't configure kernel from scratch for a very long time... ;-)

Thank you.
