What hardware do I have?
Quote:
$ sudo lspci -v | grep -i audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)

Looks like I've gotten the driver bit right:
Quote:

# zgrep SND_HDA_INTEL /proc/config.gz
CONFIG_SND_HDA_INTEL=y
# sudo lspci -k | grep -i hd
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)
Kernel driver in use: snd_hda_intel

Is alsa compiled in to most packages? I expect so:
Quote:
# eselect profile list | grep *
[6] default/linux/amd64/13.0/desktop/kde *

And looking at an example, that looks right:

Quote:
# emerge -qvp phonon-kde
[ebuild R ] kde-base/phonon-kde-4.12.5 USE="alsa (-aqua) -debug -pulseaudio"

Do I have permission to audio, yep, looks like:
Quote:
grep "audio" /etc/group
audio:x:18:[my username]

Alsa is running:
Quote:
# /etc/init.d/alsasound status
* status: started

At this stage, I would expect to need to open alsamixer, and raise my volume levels, as I've done many times before. However, when I start alsamixer, it only says
Quote:
This sound device does not have any controls.
.
Pressing F6 to pick card, I have
Quote:
- (default)
0 HDA Intel

but picking either of them makes no difference.

Quote:

# aplay -L
null
Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)

Quote:
# speaker-test -t wav -c 2

speaker-test 1.0.27.2

Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
WAV file(s)
ALSA lib /var/tmp/portage/media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.27.2/work/alsa-lib-1.0.27.2/src/pcm/pcm_dmix.c:1022:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
Playback open error: -2,No such file or directory

Looking through dmesg, I find

Quote:
[ 2.114614] ALSA device list:
[ 2.114843] No soundcards found.
[ 2.121794] hda-codec: No codec parser is available
[ 2.122045] hda-codec: No codec parser is available
[ 2.122252] hda-codec: No codec parser is available

However, some part of the kernel does appear to identify the card anyway:
Quote:
# cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel
HDA Intel at 0xf0400000 irq 47

I'm at my wits end here, and have no idea why I can't get any audio playing.
