PostPosted: Thu Mar 06, 2014 6:52 pm    Post subject: What's vmlinuz? Reply with quote

Hi guys,
so today I was emerging @world and got a new kernel on the way, I followed this guide: http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Kernel/Upgrade step by step and eventually couldn't get to a working environment.
so after a bit of trial and error, my upgrading procedure yielded me a working environment albeit there's no vmlinuz or config-3.X.Y nor System.map-3.X.Y files inside my boot directory.

Can someone please tell me how come this be? are those files non important? and most importantly what's the vmlinuz file is for, if the OS can still boot without it?

furthermore I've noticed that the vmlinuz file is created by the make install command, yet the Gentoo installation guide (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=7) does not mention this command while initially installing the kernel.. :?:

Thanks in advance for helping me understand how my Gentoo system works

It is the kernel. As for the missing files, I think you need to mount the /boot directory.

WOW that was super fast! thanks. I have all my file system in one partition so I don't think I need to mount boot..
but if it's the kernel file than how come my gentoo still boots without it?

this are the steps I make in order to upgrade my kernel:

1. eselect kernel list (After the emerge of the new kernel)
2. eselect kernel set [#] (choose the apropriate)
2. cp /usr/src/linux-3.X(-1).Y(-1)-gentoo/.config /usr/src/linux/
3. make oldconfig
4. make && make modules_install
5. cp arch/x86/boot/bzImage /boot/kernel-3.X.Y-gentoo
6. emerge @module-rebuild
7. grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

perhaps they might shed some light on the case..

BTW, do you experience connection issues to the forums too? (in the last few weeks I couldn't load the website at all, no matter what device I used)

Because of this it can boot:

Quote:
cp arch/x86/boot/bzImage /boot/kernel-3.X.Y-gentoo

That's again the kernel, just named differently; the `make install` makes the vmlinuz one, whereas `cp ...` copies it and creates it with your name.

The forum connection seems to have improved a bit; back in the days there was an hour a day outage due to some backup problem, nowadays sometimes multiple search engine crawlers taking up the resources can cause connection drops.

Thank U for both answers, too bad there ain't a 'thank U' button here, sometimes people in this forum are so nice I wish I could return the favor somehow.

Now I'm going to work on that make install thing because I want see whether there's any noticeable difference between it and and just copying...

For completeness sake, and in case other people would be interested to know in the future, I feel no difference between using the installed kernel and the copied one.
I've also found out why I couldn't get it to work on the first time: the grub2-mkconfig.. generated a file with a wrong UUID or maybe the system doesn't recognize it as the right one since my fstab for root is /dev/sda3 thus I got a kernel panic and couldn't boot before.

Hence my conclusion is - stick with just the copied kernel since it generates less files and there's no need for grub modification...

Cheers!

I guess my wording is a bit confusing, I'll try to clarify:
what I'm saying is that I felt no difference between doing a cp arch/x86/boot/bzImage /boot/kernel-3.X.Y-gentoo and doing make install after emerging my kernel, i.e. there was no noticeable speed/performance improvement to the booting time nor to the regular day to day use of my OS.
you know like the slight difference you can feel when you are using compiled program next to a binary one...

then the only thing that was significantly different on my part was the fact that using my method (steps I mentioned before) creates overall less files and also it just works, to wit, there's no need to mess with grub UUID to make it boot.

I think the direct answer is that vmlinuz is a traditional name for the compressed, compiled Linux kernel binary. Of course, you probably noticed that the created kernel is actually named bzImage.
See:
http://www.linfo.org/vmlinuz.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vmlinux
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vmlinux#bzImage

My practice for the last 10 years has been to:
Code:

#(from the /usr/src/linux directory using 3.10.25-gentoo as an example)
cp .config /boot/config-3.10.25-gentoo
cp System.map /boot/System.map-3.10.25-gentoo
cp arch/x86/boot/bzImage /boot/kernel-3.10.25-gentoo
#(and then from within the /boot directory)
ln -s kernel-3.10.25-gentoo vmlinuz

I think this may be what was in the Gentoo handbook back around 2002-2004 or so.

The extra copy of the .config file has occasionally saved me. I can't imagine the System.map being that useful, but I'm pretty good about following instructions. :-) Creating the symlink has also saved me when occasionally needing to boot from a a rescue disk because of disk/MBR problems.

Hi, thanks for sharing, by what I understand, having the system.map inside your /boot directory isn't that crucial unless you're a developer - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System.map
anyways, I still can't see why is it important to have doubles of the same files in different locations, if the system can still function properly without them.. (unless it's for backup reasons)
The symlink seems like a great idea :-)

Running make install should be equivalent to the first three copy commands. If files of the destination name already exist, they are first moved to $NAME.old, so you always have two copies from the make install, even if you do no other backups on your own.

Saving System.map is useful if you expect that a developer, not necessarily you, will need to know your kernel layout. If you use the kernel in a way that produces a WARN or BUG event and you want to report the event to the kernel developers, you may need a copy of its System.map.

The reason for at least two copies of the kernel in a working Gentoo system is that compiling takes place in the /usr/src/ (/usr/src/[kernelsource]) directory, but for compliance and compatibility with the FHS (Filesystem Hierarchy Standard), a Linux system kernel shall be in /boot. http://www.linuxfoundation.org/tags/fhs

Of course, many Linux distributions don't, by default, contain the sources or working copies created during compiling, and so just have what is found in /boot.

I had a similar problem, make install didn't work for me.

The config file it copies to the /boot folder didn't allow my kernel to boot because some UUID error I didn't know how to fix. :(

Copying the bzimage to /boot worked perfectly.

The configuration file is not used for boot at all. It is useful only to keep an external record of how the kernel was configured, in case you subsequently need to know what options were used to build it. Since you did not provide any error messages, we cannot help you fix your problem.

Sorry about not posting any error messages. I don't have too much knowledge about logs so I don't know where I can recover the error message from a kernel panic.

I understand the config file shouldn't be used on boot.

But if I put the following config file in my /boot folder, I cannot boot. I don't know why.

Sorry about not posting any error messages. I don't have too much knowledge about logs so I don't know where I can recover the error message from a kernel panic.
Kernel panic messages can be recovered from the system console, unless they are scrolled away by other output associated with the panic.

I wrote it down. Here it is the error I get after using make install instead of just copying the kernel:

Code:

[1.684203] ata8: SATA link down (SStatus 0 SControl 300)
[1.685228] VFS: Cannot open root device "UUID=5816b765-cbc0-4d91-b5b0-ad24f9b48fd5" or unknown-block(0,0): error -6
[1.686236] Please append a correct "root=" boot option; here are the available partitions:
...
{Several partitions with their codes}
...
[1.700718] Kernel panic -not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

It seems boot partition cannot be found, but I don't know why it fails with make install and it works copying the kernel.

Any clues?

Please post the output of make install and the command that you used to copy the kernel manually.

My guess is that with the manual copy you did not copy it with the right filename and are actually booting the old kernel?
Are you using an initramfs? Maybe you need to rebuild it for the new kernel or maybe your new kernel was built without initrd support. Did you edit the boot loader configuration?

Maybe somebody can correct me on this but I don't think the kernel supports the root=UUID option (it's not listed on the documentation and it didn't worked for me). So I think the option only works when the root filesystem is mounted by the initramfs.

I copy the kernel file with:

Code:

linux # cp arch/x86_64/boot/bzImage /boot/kernel-3.14.14-gentoo

The output of make install:

Code:

linux # make install
sh /usr/src/linux-3.14.14-gentoo/arch/x86/boot/install.sh 3.14.14-gentoo arch/x86/boot/bzImage \
        System.map "/boot"

Hmm, I think it's picking the x86 one, instead of the x86_64. Could this one be the problem?

No, the one on x86_64 is a symlink to the one in x86.

I think the problem is that you're copying it as kernel-3.14.14-gentoo but make install copies it as vmlinuz-3.14.14-gentoo, hence the file that you're copying manually is not being used, so you're still booting the old kernel.

As for the kernel panic you may need to rebuild your initramfs.

After make install, I'm running grub2-mkconfig, and it detects correctly the new kernel, whatever its name is, so I boot the right one.

But I think you could be right about the initramfs. Can anyone point me to a guide for rebuild it, please?

I am not using genkernel. I need the initramfs for uvesafb.
And it seems to me that the initramfs should be generated in the compilation of the kernel.

I have compiled many kernels and, after copying the file to /boot manually, it always worked and it booted the right one.

Am I missing anything?
