So I was trying to rebuild world with "emerge -e world" not too long after the first installation.

Everything seemed more or less fine (had some trouble with a reference to a missing stubs32.h in glibc) until I got to sandbox. If I go to the work directory I can compile sandbox with "./configure && make && make install", but emerge seems to have trouble and such breaking the rebuild.

I'm not sure if it is a bug or just a result of misconfiguration, but I'd appreciate any help to overcome the problem.

Sorry you're in the classic : build with no multilib and i then switch to multilib.
It just doesn't works.

Not sure why I put multilib in the USE flag, but it doesn't seem to work if I put it in or leave it out anymore (think its was something related to samba), but I guess you are suggesting to either leave it out and live with the limitation or start over with both feet in? Can't really get anywhere with the current system :( . I checked out http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Multilib and I guess the only real supported multilib is the portage multilib?

So I guess the easiest will be to clear '/' the partition and reinstall a multilib portage?
Edit: This is actually what I did. Maybe it wasn't necessary but it worked. In my case I felt it was better to start with a x64_32 instead of a x64 from scratch. My installation wasn't that personalized. I also put in a few optimizations that haven't given me any problems at all.

Reinstalling is probably easiest. But I've seen rumors that it is possible to quickpkg the toolchain (gcc, etc) from a multilib chroot, install them in the main system, reconfigure it appropriately, then rebuild things to bootstrap it back to multilib. I don't know the details.

It actually isn't that difficult to do an in place conversion from no multilib to multilib. I'd be happy to post the steps if you are interested, but it is unsupported so if it doesn't work you get to keep the pieces.

Seems my last post didn't go through. It was a bit off topic as it didn't concern sandbox/multilib so much.

Anyway, after last time my system is up and running as far as emerge and multilib goes. Started over with multilib included. I'm pretty happy with the setup, except for my USB3 ports seem to be running at USB2 speeds.

Things are included for the usb3 to work, such as the xhci module and the usb wire is usb3, the port is usb3. The disk is capable of 80+ MB/s (I know from a previous version of the drive that was mounted on windows on another machine). There are many things that can go wrong I know, but I might open a new thread for all of this soon.
Edit: Discovered that the problem doesn't lie with xhci anymore, but rather with NFS (and probably specifically the Windows implementation of Client for NFS). Had the same problem with samba.
Now if only I knew how to mark this thing as solved.
