I have tried to boot into gentoo - but I can't
the grub comes up but then get a message stating
softreset failed device not ready
then kernel panics
Is my hard drive dead?
I have tried switching everything to IDE in the motherboard, tried different SATA ports, and Sata cables, I can't even use a livecd it still states softreset failed. |

+1 check your drive presence in bios, because Windows may not see a drive if it is attach to a controller that need a driver for it ; so your Windows check is not sane. |

Softreset failed is a drive error message though. One other thing you can do is unplug the cable from the drive and boot from a live CD, then plug the drive cable back in and watch dmesg and/or use smartctl to check the diagnostics. |
