Hi,

Just a simple question, if I want to install Xorg server with nvidia card, should I select nouveau in kernel option? I mean, in the wiki is not clear enough because in xorg wiki says to follow nvidia wiki and in nvidia wiki also says to follow xorg wiki at some point.

My real question is, If I select nouveau in kernel, will I have some problems with nvidia propietary drivers?

Direct Rendering Manager (XFree86 4.1.0 and higher DRI support) --->
Nouveau (Nvidia cards)

Thanks

You can change between each.

The presence of a driver does not mean it will actually be used. You can choose which driver to use later, and even switch on-the-fly.

Ok, but when I don't choose nouveau in kernel, leaving direct rendering manager without any selection, I receive a warning at the begining of kernel compilation. Is this ok?

I don't know.

I just started converting a Gentoo box for gui after a long time with my only Gentoo setups as minimal command line boxes. I just started trying to get xorg installed again. My experience isn't recent at all, so I don't really want to give you a bad answer.

I don't recall having had that problem before when I built a box for a gui, but it's been a few years.

I would set the kernel up for noveau so that you have it as an option. Back when I was using Gentoo as a desktop before, each driver had advantages and disadvantages, to the point where one might actually stop working. It's nice to have a fallback.

Hopefully they're a little more stable now.

Ok, thank you very much for your answers.

I remember nvidia propietary drivers requires to put nouveau in blacklist. So, if you want to use nvidia propietary drivers, you'd better disable nouveau in kernel. It should be ok if you follow the nvidia wiki

I have used nvidia drivers in the past but switched to nouveau some time ago ... I have an older card so switched to nouveau.
I suggest you check the support for your video card and decide on that basis which is best for you - lspci output will be useful in establishing card information.

Ed: I had to go from kernel 3.14.16 to 3.18.3 because I had issues with nouveau ... I used to keep vesa as a backup, but since I tend to surf the net using links in graphical mode in a framebuffer I don't need a backup for X anymore ;) ymmv
