Hi all,
I'm trying to do a fresh install on my new toy. It has a 120GB NVMe SSD drive, and a 1TB mechanical disk.
Obviously, for performance, I want to install to the SSD.

Trouble is, because it's NVMe, I can't see it from the liveCD - there doesn't seem to be support built into the kernel for it.

I have already done an install to the mechanical disk - this was before ASUS released a new BIOS update that would allow me to see the NVMe SSD device.
On that install, after the BIOS update, I added support into the kernel for NVMe and could see it just fine.

Then decides that now I could see it, I might as well install to it.

I have search all available modules on the minimal install disk, but cannot find the 'nvme' module that I need to be able to see the device, but cannot.

Any ideas what I can do?

I suppose if all else fails, I could just try to copy the disk from mechanical to SSD in the working install I have on the mechanical.

Ta ever so
Matt.

Try http://sysresccd.org instead of liveCD.

You can use any Linux live CD to install Gentoo. Just use one that sees the SSD. Also you can use the existing installation on the hard drive to install to the SSD.

You may want to take note of "lspci -k" output so that you know for sure that the nvme driver needs to be enabled in the kernel for it to work. Then you can report a bug and ask for the Gentoo InstallCD to have that option enabled too.

Sysrescue CD - of course I can! I've used it before. Thanks for being there to back up my failing memory.

Also, charles17, you say I can install from a current install - really? That never occurred to me. Do I just boot up as normal, and then do everything as if i'd just booted into a live CD?

Cheers all.

You're right, it was. Sorry, chithanh you get credit for that one.

charles17, you need to up your game now.

Right, time to get installing.

I'm sure i'll be back on later to get some more help - couldn't get touchpad working before, so I expect i'll still have that issue.
That's for later though - have some fish to get your brains prepped.

Matt.
