Hi all,

So, having gotten to a working kernel (recompiled several times now) I've been trying to work through the process of getting the KDE-Plasma desktop environment working; not because I don't like the console, I do, but I really need a graphical clock ;)

I'm not sure if it's my clumsy meddling, the hardware I have or what (certainly the former has *a lot* to do with it) but I can't get X to start.

I've been trawling through the Xorg and Nvidia wiki pages to ensure that I have the right drivers, USE flags, kernel compile options and what not and I've made some kind of progress: from no screens found, to no device, to no discernable error at all!

I'll try to summarise the current situ and humbly ask for assistance troubleshooting...

First the basics, please let me know what other things I should be providing:
Code:

As you can see I have an onboard Intel and an Nvidia GTX1050Mobile

I don't particularly care which card I get things kicked off with but Nvidia works fine in the Gentoo Live and Mint etc so I thought I'd go in for it.

startx as root produces the rather unhelpful fail:

Couldn't get a file descriptor referring to the console

I've looked into ensuring that I have udev running (it is), the nvidia module has been recompiled for the current kernel and reloaded, I've rebooted, I've tried with and without an extant xorg.conf (and before and after nvidia-xsettings)

Ideas people>?

Please show your ~/.xinitrc
~/.xinitrc for fluxbox:
# https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/X_resources#Adding_to_xinitrc
[[ -f ~/.Xresources ]] && xrdb -merge -I$HOME ~/.Xresources

Hi Charles, I don't have an .xinitrc - when does it get created? I would have thought part of the package emerge for users on the system?
There's not one for root - but then I expect root isn't expected to be an x user on the whole. In fact I thought my problem might have been related to trying to startx as root...

The ~/.xinitrc needs to be created manually. See https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/KDE#No_display_manager and https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Xorg/Guide#Using_startx.

stardotstar,

Your log tells that
Code:
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc: line 58: twm: command not found
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc: line 61: xterm: command not found
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc: line 59: xclock: command not found

Xorg started normally but found nothing to do. You didn't install your GUI clock. :)

To make that work,
Code:
emerge -1av xterm xclock twm

The wiki page tells you to do that for testing and Gentoo works best when you build on what you know works.
The -1 option prevents xterm xclock and twm being added to your @world and its unlikely you want to keep them.

NeddySeagoon,

Without an appropriate ~/.xinitrc the system doesn't even know about plasma, kde, whatever.

All good points that make sense.

I got sidetracked and confused with:

consolekit in the wiki and ended up missing the step:

Quote:
No display manager

Plasma can be started the old-fashioned way with startx, but extra care needs to be taken to ensure it gets a valid session. The following solution is limited to ConsoleKit:

I went to ConsoleKit and

Quote:
ConsoleKit is a framework for defining and tracking users, login sessions, and seats. ConsoleKit's primary function is to support multi-user setups. It also works for a single user, but offers no benefits compared to existing methods.

I'd not heard of it before and despite being clear on building a multiuser system I figured on "no benefits compared to existing methods."

So... I need to choose a wdm and redo the emerging with new uses? ie SDDM?

Sorry my head is spinning.

charles17,

Correct. By default, with no .xinitrc, startx tries to start twm, xclock and three xterms.
However, by default none of these packages are installed.

emerging twm, xclock xterm allows Xorg to be tested with some simple things, which keeps the problem space small, just Xorg, when something doesn't work.

twm emerge seems to set things up so startx knows about it - but nothing happens

I get a black screen with underscore cursor top left and when I switch back to console I have to kill with Ctrl-C

@Charles - I thought it should be SDDM as it gets pulled in by the profile, no?

Try with

#!/bin/sh
exec startkde
But if it goes wrong, be warned. I am not an expert of KDE / or plasma.

Seems to have helped some!

Maybe some other executable of plasma-desktop or what have you?

Then you need to work through all the kde related stuff and/or wait for support by kde experts.
Or, start with something simple like Fluxbox and move to big flagship later.

I'm not sure xorg works. twm should have started.

The KDE log implies that dbus is needed but it doesn't seem to be running.
Its worth starting dbus and seeing if that makes a difference.

I'm a Xfrce and Mate user, so I can't help much with KDE.

OK Charles, cool. Good idea - I immediately gravitate to fvwm and for that I get same issue with the underscore cursor top left black screen and the following:

NeddySeagoon - dbus is not started.

Code:
xps15 /etc/init.d # ./dbus status
 * Executing: /lib64/rc/sh/openrc-run.sh /lib64/rc/sh/openrc-run.sh /etc/init.d/dbus status
 * status: stopped
xps15 /etc/init.d #

good call.
Investigating

started - one error

Code:

xps15 /etc/init.d # ./dbus start
 * Caching service dependencies ...                                                        [ ok ]
 * Executing: /lib64/rc/sh/openrc-run.sh /lib64/rc/sh/openrc-run.sh /etc/init.d/dbus start
 * Starting dbus ...
 * start-stop-daemon: fopen `/var/run/dbus.pid': No such file or directory
 * Detaching to start `/usr/bin/dbus-daemon' ...                                           [ ok ]
xps15 /etc/init.d # ./dbus status
 * Executing: /lib64/rc/sh/openrc-run.sh /lib64/rc/sh/openrc-run.sh /etc/init.d/dbus status
 * status: started
xps15 /etc/init.d #

nope - same diff with dbus running

Code:
will@xps15 ~ $ startx
hostname: Unknown host
xauth:  file /home/will/.serverauth.3284 does not exist

stardotstar,

Add dbus to the default runlevel so it starts every boot.

I think I've made a mess; I think I'll scrub the system and start again with some of the learnings I have now.

stardotstar.

That's not how you fix gentoo.

Reinstalling only lets you make a whole set of new mistakes.
You will learn more by fixing what you have now.
