In the ALSA wiki article I could not find a solution for this problem :-(
The device is [8086:1e20] :
Code:
lspci -nnkv | sed -n '/Audio/,/^$/p'

00:1b.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation 7 Series/C216 Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller [8086:1e20] (rev 04)
Subsystem: Dell 7 Series/C216 Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller [1028:0534]
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 28
        Memory at f7e30000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2
        Capabilities: [60] MSI: Enable+ Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit+
Capabilities: [70] Express Root Complex Integrated Endpoint, MSI 00
        Kernel driver in use: snd_hda_intel
Sound related kernel config is here.

Problem is I am not getting any sound. And aplay --list-devices says:
Code:
$ aplay --list-devices

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: Generic Analog [Generic Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

Code:
$ aplay --list-pcms

null
Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)
pulse
    PulseAudio Sound Server
sysdefault:CARD=PCH
    HDA Intel PCH, Generic Analog
    Default Audio Device
front:CARD=PCH,DEV=0
    HDA Intel PCH, Generic Analog
    Front speakers
surround21:CARD=PCH,DEV=0
    HDA Intel PCH, Generic Analog
2.1 Surround output to Front and Subwoofer speakers
surround40:CARD=PCH,DEV=0
    HDA Intel PCH, Generic Analog
4.0 Surround output to Front and Rear speakers
surround41:CARD=PCH,DEV=0
    HDA Intel PCH, Generic Analog
4.1 Surround output to Front, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround50:CARD=PCH,DEV=0
    HDA Intel PCH, Generic Analog
5.0 Surround output to Front, Center and Rear speakers
surround51:CARD=PCH,DEV=0
    HDA Intel PCH, Generic Analog
5.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround71:CARD=PCH,DEV=0
    HDA Intel PCH, Generic Analog
7.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Side, Rear and Woofer speakers

Are there any details I am missing?

does it work after a few reboots?
my snd_hda_intel has issues since 4.12.5, the sound works again after a few (one or more) cold / warm boots. its randomly. Mixer levels are the same beforfe and after this issue. its just some thing in the initalization here with the newer kernels.

Just tried 10 x, each after a reboot. But did not solve it ( using 4.9.49-gentoo-r1 ).

Edit:
[SOLVED] Problem was caused by a muting hardware switch.
