This problem persists for quite a long time - about a year now. Actually it is as old as my gentoo installation.

When I turn on my notebook sometimes 3D acceleration doesn't work. glxgears shows black window, system is very slow to respond, but in several seconds I manage to close the window and system becomes responsive again. No matter how many times I try to run glxgears again the result is the same: it doesn't work. skypeforlinux and my favourite 3D game wouldn't start with same symptoms.

The only way to "fix" the problem is to restart. It's not necessary to restart the system, it's enough to relogin to desktop (btw the desktop is MATE).

After each relogin to desktop I am either lucky (all the 3D programs work ok) or not (all the 3D programs do not work).

No new records appear at /var/log/messages at the time I start glxgears. No new records appear at /proc/driver/nvidia/warnings/*.

I can see no significant differences in /var/log/Xorg.0.log files corresponding to "lucky" and "unlucky" logins. However there are error messages at the moment I run glxgears:

That makes it easier for your helpers to read.
The only graphics chip I see is

I have compared xorg log files and noticed that different ModulePath's. So, I have returned one of the conf files:

I guess one of the problems is gone - 3D acceleration works stable.

I changed the following line in make.conf:

VIDEO_CARDS="nvidia"  # it was VIDEO_CARDS="nvidia intel"


updated and cleaned the system, and it works now.

Another problem remains - I do not understand what is going on. I am not even sure if my system is using optimus technology :(

During initial system configuration I followed this guide: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Lenovo_Thinkpad_W530.
It mentions that optimus technology is used, however reference lspci output provided in the guide looks very similar to lspci output on my laptop: only Nvidia VGA controller is present.

I guess I took the value for VIDEO_CARDS variable from the wrong section of the guide. Sad thing is I am not able to find the rootcause of the problem - only read the guide again and try to find the discrepancy between the guide and my configuration.

Xorg with the open source drivers works out the the box. It does not need any additional config files at all.
With nvidia-drivers, you the minimal Section "Device" that I posted earlier so that the nvidia driver gets loaded.

If you are not in the USA, you will probably hate the default setup but that's fine tuning.

In an Optimus system, lspci will always show an Intel and nVidia grapdics chip.
Optimus is actually one and a half graphics systems.
It Intel one is the only whole one. Its the only one that can render the image onto the display surface.
The nVidia chip has no connection to the outside world at all. Trying to use it alone always results in a blank screen.
When the nVidia GPU in in use, the two GPUs cooperate. The nVidia chip draws the image in the pixel buffer and the INtel chip paints it on the display surface.

You was correct: my system has no optimus feature. Well, hardware supports it, but it is disabled in BIOS. There are 3 options there: use integrated video, discrete or optimus. Depending on what option I select the lspci command reports either only Intel card, only Nvidia card or both. As expected.

So, now I am using only Nvidia card.

I am using the minimal conf file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-nvidia.conf:

This is not enough. Looks like because of the nvidia drivers bug described here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-304/+bug/1276123 the X system loads wrong libglx.so, so I have to specify these paths in another conf file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20opengl.conf:

So far so good, but I was too optimistic when decided that the problem is gone. Sometimes glxgears (and whatever else what requires 3D acceleration) doesn't work and requires restart of X. But it occurs much less frequently (once per 5-10 starts, previously it failed 50%). xorg.log's corresponding to successful and not so successful X sessions are almost identical.

Any more ideas about what can be the rootcause of the problem are welcome!

It turned out that eselect openlg creates this config file. I remove it, do eselect opengl set 2 and it returns.

That's new to me but my nVidia card is 10 years old and I had to give op the binary blob a while ago now.
