probably a common problem, i'm getting terrible swapping with 8 jobs on 8gb (minus 256mb or so for the igp) of memory. i've seen it happen with the chromium-related builds (webkit, webengine, what have you), might be the case elsewhere too. anyone figured out the best course of action here? ignore smt and only use -j4? can you do that per package? do away with -pipe? something else?

You can change env variables per package with package.env

crappuccino,

-pipe is a request to gcc to pass intermediate files in RAM if there is sufficient RAM to support it. Its not a command, so it will be ignored when RAM is scarce.

Chromium is pretty much a worst case for this. Setting USE=jumbo-build and a really low MAKEOPTS (-j 2 or 3) seems to actually be faster than trying to max out all cores.
