Hello,

I'm getting the following messages on two Notebooks (Thinkpad X201 and Thinkpad T420) while boot:

Code:
Nov 11 12:01:13 small-gabosh kernel: iwlwifi: Unknown symbol reg_query_regdb_wmm (err -2)
Nov 11 12:01:13 small-gabosh kernel: iwlwifi: Unknown symbol ieee80211_channel_to_frequency (err -2)
Nov 11 12:01:13 small-gabosh kernel: iwlwifi: Unknown symbol ieee80211_hdrlen (err -2)

WLAN works but seems to be a bit slower then with Windows.

Does someone know this boot messages and is there a solution?

The kernel (4.19.0) is build with genkernel.

Regards
olli

olli.bo,

You have a piece of your kernel missing.

In the kernel ieee80211_hdrlen is defined in ./net/wireless/util.c:EXPORT_SYMBOL(ieee80211_hdrlen);
./net/wireless/util.c:EXPORT_SYMBOL(ieee80211_channel_to_frequency);

and ./net/wireless/reg.c:EXPORT_SYMBOL(reg_query_regdb_wmm);

So you need to configure whatever builds those files into your kernel and rebuild it.

This shouldn't happen. It implies that your kernel and modules are out of step or you have been using a text editor on the kernel .config file.

The former can be fixed by rebuilding and reinstalling your kernel starting with
Code:
make clean
in the build directory.
This forces everything to be rebuild.

There is no fix for using a text editor on the kernel .config file.
Throw away the .config and start again.
The kernel configuration tools all manage dependencies. Some of which are hidden config symbols.

NeddySeagoon,

thanks for the answer. I didn't edit the .config file with a text editor. I used the official "menuconfig".
Tried again wigh gentoo-sources-4.19-1. same message.

Here all iwlwifi-messages.
Code:
# uname -r
4.19.1-gentoo
# dmesg | grep iwlwifi
[    7.214249] iwlwifi: Unknown symbol reg_query_regdb_wmm (err -2)

[   21.726195] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0 wlan0: disabling VHT as WMM/QoS is not supported by the A

After emerge of sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-4.19.1 I used genkernel for building the kernel with the following opts (no text editor on .config):
Code:
genkernel all --menuconfig --no-mrproper --no-zfs --no-lvm --no-mdadm --no-dmraid --no-multipath --no-iscsi --no-luks --no-gpg --btrfs --compress-initrd --compress-initramfs-type=xz

olli.bo,

What does
Code:
uname -a
show?
Do you have a separate /boot partition and if so, was it mounted whet you build and installed your kernel?

Same with Kernel 4.19.2.

@NeddySeagoon:

I don't have a separate /boot partition.

Code:
# uname -a
Linux small-gabosh.gabosh.net 4.19.2-gentoo #1 SMP Wed Nov 14 15:06:25 CET 2018 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2520M CPU @ 2.50GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
