Hi folks,

Last week I made a fresh Gentoo installation as my old system which I've been using for more than 10 years without a single re-install started to shout lots of slot conflicts at me which I just were not able solve. Therefore I thought: Well, it's time to start all over again. And I did.

At first everything worked fine. I just installed the base system, Xorg and XFCE4 and a few packages like Firefox and some XFCE4 apps. Syncs and updates also worked fine. Until today. I suddenly get again this nightmare called "Slot conflict". :? Here is what I get when trying a world update:

Code:

# emerge -uND --with-bdeps=y --backtrack=30 --verbose-conflicts @world

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

It may be possible to solve this problem by using package.mask to
prevent one of those packages from being selected. However, it is also
possible that conflicting dependencies exist such that they are
impossible to satisfy simultaneously.  If such a conflict exists in
the dependencies of two different packages, then those packages can
not be installed simultaneously.

I would need some help in order to solve this issue. Can somebody help, please?

TIA!

Try with
Code:
emerge -1 =xfce-base/xfconf-4.13.5 =xfce-base/xfce4-session-4.12.1-r2 =xfce-base/xfce4-appfinder-4.12.0-r2 =xfce-base/libxfce4ui-4.13.4 =xfce-base/xfwm4-4.12.5 =xfce-extra/xfce4-power-manager-1.6.1 =xfce-extra/xfce4-notifyd-0.4.3-r1 =xfce-base/xfdesktop-4.12.4

and then re-run update

Yeah, I ran into the same thing today. Stable xfce4 seems to be broken. KDE is my primary WM and xfce is just my backup, so I put the following in /etc/portage/package.mask:

Code:

=xfce-base/xfconf-4.13.5
=xfce-base/xfce4-panel-4.13.4

That stopped the portage complaints for now.

But if I try to run previous command I don't have a slot conflicts

Nope, gives even more strange errors:

Code:

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

It may be possible to solve this problem by using package.mask to
prevent one of those packages from being selected. However, it is also
possible that conflicting dependencies exist such that they are
impossible to satisfy simultaneously.  If such a conflict exists in
the dependencies of two different packages, then those packages can
not be installed simultaneously. You may want to try a larger value of
the --backtrack option, such as --backtrack=30, in order to see if
that will solve this conflict automatically.

For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man
page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

Yes, this stops the complaints also for me.
