When my laptop resumes from sleep, I hear it doing a repetitive disk clicking sound for somewhere between a few seconds and a few minutes, and it freezes most system functions until its finished.

Under dmesg it shows:
Code:

The messages are for both sda and sdb system disks. After it stops doing the clicking it then works fine until I suspend it again.

I have the exact same problem. My machine is a Lenovo Legion Y530-15ICH. I'm running 5.2.1-aufs but had the same problem with 4.14-aufs.
Here's an lspci -k in case it's useful...

I ended up changing the power management tools and the problem has gone away. I can't remember the details but I believe I removed laptop mode tools (LMT) and replaced it with TLP using an overlay. I came across other discussions that suggested the problem was related to LMT and I couldn't find a fix, TLP has been working fine for me. I'm a little surprised that TLP isn't in the standard ebuild tree, I get the impression it is the preferred Linux power management system these days?

Awesome, thanks. This worked for me :)
