I just got my hands on the Raspberry Pi 4 model B! It has 4 gigs of RAM so I am happily replacing my little RPi 3 of 1 gig. Anyone have one yet and tried the RPi 3 x64 install guide yet? https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Raspberry_Pi_3_64_bit_Install
Other than the 4x memory, USB3.0, 1Gbit Eth, and 2 HDMIs, it also touts x64 mode. I have no idea if it is the same difficulty as getting x64 Gentoo on the RPi 3.

I swear I'm not trying to market the RPi's ;) Just an excited micro-server admin.

kwispy,

There is an addendum to the Pi 3 Guide.

The 64 bit Pi3 userland works. My binhost will run on the Pi 3 and the Pi 4 but its built for the Pi 3 CPU.

Use the most up to date rpi-4.19.y kernel you can. Things keep getting fixed.

Very cool. I managed to get the RPi 4 up and going with the arm64 guide and your addendum, Neddy. Thanks! I'm not often in the forums, so I didn't notice the Gentoo on ARM forum.

Since I have 3 GB of ram sitting around unused, I'm wondering if I should try a newer kernel beyond the rpi-4.19.y from here https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/tree/rpi-4.19.y to get the full 4 GB of ram working? I'm not even sure where to look to find the current status. I'm assuming it is all in the kernel development. Know of a mailing list or recent git comments about the issue? I found this thread on the official forum: https://lb.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=244367 (see 3rd reply from jamesh about LPAE). Are they stating they have kernel patches that allow 4GB ram to be used?

Continuing to search...

Seems like the "mm" folder of the kernel on github has some interesting tidbits.

On RaspberryPi, only the first 1Gb can be used for DMA[1].

More clues...
https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/issues/3057

It seems related to DMA issues within the SoC. Still in development. Sigh. It would be awesome if I knew enough of the kernel to help!

Feel free to move this post to the ARM section.
