emerge --update --deep --with-bdeps=y --newuse --quiet-build @world

gave me sys-kernel/linux-firmware-20190815 and after that I was not able to boot my laptop: I got a black screen at the point where the kernel boots (after dmcrypt asks for passphrase to mount root dir). Two leds on my laptop were flashing, otherwise dead. Could not even get a terminal by pressing ctrl+alt+f1.

Found this https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1077674-start-0.html and masked out: =sys-kernel/linux-firmware-20190815 (after usb boot and chroot'ing) and emerge then gave me sys-kernel/linux-firmware-20190603.

After reboot my laptop works again.

I have tried to get some more info about this for debug, but if I boot with sys-kernel/linux-firmware-20190815 and after that usb boot + chroot I am not able to see any log info - does anyone have any ideas?

My laptop has an nvidia card and I use nouveau.

Wouldn't there be a /var/log/dmesg you can view? (in the chroot)

I don't think so - I looked at the /var/log/ files with the latest timestamp (in the chroot) and I saw only logs that had the shutdown/reboot as the last entries. But let me retry and have a second look.

Looked again after booting with linux-firmware-20190904 installed (after usb boot + chrooting) - no logs in /var/log has been updated with any info about the failing boot.

I now have these masked:

=sys-kernel/linux-firmware-20190815
=sys-kernel/linux-firmware-20190904
