Hi all,

I'm using the Gentoo LiveDVD (latest) in order to install Gentoo from a desktop environment. The reason that I'm doing this is because I'm trying to install Gentoo to a Dell XPS 13 (9333), which has no Ethernet port and only an inbuilt wifi card. The desktop environment (should in theory) make it easier to enable networking and then use the terminal to install Gentoo.

The issue I have is that although the keyboard works, the mouse doesn't.

I've hit F12 to drop a terminal down and then type sudo su to enable root user, but I don't know what I should be enabling (with modprobe?) to get the mouse pad to work.

Can anyone give me any advice?

It may not be a kernel driver (which probably does have mouse support) but rather an X11 driver.

I'm pretty sure the laptop in question uses the synaptic touch pad:

That might get you started.

I do have
Code:
INPUT_DEVICES="evdev synaptics"
in /etc/portage/make.conf and of course
Code:
CONFIG_INPUT_EVDEV=m
in my kernel .config. Furthermore you could try sys-libs/gpm at the console to see, if the mouse device works at least at the konsole.

Don't.

Yes. Use SysRescueCd instead (put it on a USB stick). SysRescueCd has great hardware support, including wireless.

Many thanks for the replies. I'm going to go for the System Rescue CD option instead... I'll let you know how it goes at a later date!!!

Trying the System Rescue CD, and the mouse works but I have no wifi interface when I run iwconfig.

The inbuilt card inside the XPS 13 (9333) is the Intel 7620 (rev 6b). Does anyone know if this can be enabled?

with sysresccd, boot into the xfce4 desktop (startx) and run networkmanager from the icon in the lower right. Then run a browser with the handbook in a window next to a terminal window and save some typing with copy and paste.

I've resolved by going back to the Gentoo Live DVD and using a USB mouse for the time being. At least I actually have Gentoo installing now!!!
