my amd based computer is dying so I've got on order an intel system - a Haswell i5 processor and board. I've already gotten new hard drives and put them in the old amd machine. In order to jumpstart the install, I have fired up the old system on a systemrescue disk and chrooted into the new drives. I've installed a stage 3 tarball and the portage snapshot.

How far can I go before I need to wait for the new processor/board? My old amd system is 64bit. In my chrooted environment, I've put under the CFLAGS "-march=core-avx2 -O2 -pipe"

Can I go ahead and compile system files and everything else or is it not possible? In the handbook I'm up to the point I need to install the kernel. So I can forge ahead or wait for the processor and board to put the hard drives on before going further.

thx in advance, JD

[edit] I'll mark this solved not because I have an answer but because I've decided not to go ahead. The old system is just too unstable now. I'll wait til the parts come and try again normally then.

avx? I thought that instruction didn't get in until piledriver. I suspect something like march=core2 would be somewhat safe but there's that one flavor of sse that didn't get into amd (sse2?). I would probably keep things generic until I got over to the new processor in any case. Most of what I've been doing lately is jumping between Sandy Bridge or later and Piledriver or Trinity or later APU.

Thanks vaxbrat for the input. I got the core-avx2 from here: http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Safe_CFLAGS#Haswell as well as double checked on some other website. But I don't really know. When I get the new gear I'll just go with "native" probably. Moot point at this juncture since the old one crashes randomly enough that it is difficult to do anything on. /jd
