I'm not a Genoo user, but considering switching to it. I definitely would like to omit any desktop environment and rely just on a window manager like fluxbox. It may be obvious that you don't have to install an environment, but the installation manual does not say so explicitly, and I don't want to find out after going through the trouble of installation that no environment is not an option. My apologies for being paranoid.

The installation manual (called the Handbook in Gentoo) doesn't mention any desktop environment or window manager of any kind. Rest assured that no particular DE or WM is forced on you. ;)

Or init system or shell for that matter.

Really, the handbook is more what you would call guidelines rather than actual rules. You can customize according to taste and some important programs, like smartmontools, iptables, opentpd etc. are not even mentioned. Literally, you build the system you want with less pain than LFS.

Apologies if I take a while to respond. I'm currently working on the dematerialization circuit for my blue box.
