I am installing Gentoo in another VirtualBox today for some testing and had a strange thing happen. When I opened make.conf to set USE, I see the normal USE="-systemd -gtk -gnome acpi bindist mmx sse sse2", but now a few lines down I have USE="{$USE} -* acl alsa unicode ..." and it contains a TON of things. This is in the first step for editing the conf. I have not done mirrorselect or set a profile. It just has this USE line at the bottom of the file that I do not have on ANY of my other systems which were setup prior to today. Is this a bug?

Just delete it or comment it out if you do not like its contents.

I am simply curious as to why it was added. It seems odd since it could have been appended to the normal USE line. Why have the normal one, then a second one?

Some files are provided as an example, just to show you what can be done, make.conf is one of them.

Alright. It just caught me by surprise since it has not been there until this morning. Thanks for the info. I am just going to remove the line and use the main line and the profile I select.

Quote:
USE="{$USE} -* acl alsa unicode ..."
doesn't look like an example because
- typo
- $USE is utterly useless before -*
- -* disables use defaults which won't be recommended by the distribution

Could it be you used some tool (flaggy/ufed/somethingelse) with only partial support of Portages configuration format and this is a means of getting the tool to work despite the limited support?
