I got this USB device which's all of microSD card reader, GSM modem and it gets detected as an NIC via which you can access the Internet (it doesn't need any dialer).

Googling got me the module cdc_ether instantly. I build those modules and udev did load automatically on inserting the modem but unlike with my Debian system, the NIC is not getting detected. There's no interface spawned.

Anyone experienced with this device?

Using 3.17 kernel on Gentoo and 3.16 kernel on Debian.

Ok, got it. It was usb_modeswitch's fault.

When installing these kind of modems (like ZTE MF197), you need to remove usb_modeswitch.
