I am not sure where to put this. My hardened kernel will not compile due to fstack-protector-strong. I am using GCC 4.8.3 which does not support it. It is kernel 3.17. The other day I successfully installed hardened Gentoo on a server with kernel 3.15 and, I believe, the same version of GCC. It seems like something has been changed in the default profile since then, and developers are using GCC 4.9.x instead of 4.8.3 which is currently the Gentoo default. I am not sure where to pursue this. I also do not know how to disable the -fstack-protector-strong flag for kernel compilation. I am currently rebuilding GCC with fnostack-protector-strong in /etc/portage/package.use, but I don't know if that will help.

clintpatty,

Go to make menuconfig in the kernel.

Choose
Code:
Stack Protector buffer overflow detection (Strong)  --->
on the General setup in make menuconfig and set
Code:
Stack Protector buffer overflow detection (Regular)  --->
