Boot SystemRescueCD which is 32 and 64 bits. Then see if it runs in 32 or 64 bits (uname -a)

Yes. And this can be used to install Gentoo (Gentoo-based, mixed 32 and 64 system, with a lot of wireless drivers, graphical interface, internet browser, ...)

xaviermiller,

Quote:

I did boot with SystemRescueCD and uname -a:
Sorry that I can not copy&paste the full output due to battery empty (I am looking for the charger...),
but I remember this details: kernel-3.10.60 i586 - Can you please tell form this info if it is 32 or 64?

SystemRescueCD looks really nice tool but I did not find any referring to Gentoo at web site -
Can you please add short explanation, or a link, how to do it?

Thanks

Your machine is 32 bits.

All the information is in the handbook ;)

pmam,

System Rescue CD boots in 32 bit mode by default. The i586 tells that that kernel will run on a Pentium 1 or later.
To try a 64 bit kernel you need to choose it from the menu.

I tried it and it did not work - so this is 32 bits....

I already know it... My question was regarding your comment:
How to use SystemRescueCD to install Gentoo?

BTW: Last time, I prepared 'Gentoo Minimal Installation CD' with a GUI tool from openSUSE,
called Studio, that writes the installation file to USB stick -
Please inform me if Genetoo has a similar GUI tool to burn USB stick,
or at least how to do it with console commands?

Thanks

Nope, the latest versions of SystemRescueCD are hybrid and do a CPU check to launch it in 64 or 32 bits ;)

I found in this WIKI https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/LiveUSB/HOWTO
this tool: sys-boot/unetbootin - I will use it to prepare USB flash memory for installation...
