Hi,

Fresh install here on a new box. (i7, 8 cores, 16GB RAM) and I am almost done with the install, but grub will not install. The only default setting that I have changed is MAKEOPTS in the make.conf file. Any help would be appreciated.

emerge grub finishes without error...

Code:
mybox boot # grub
bash: grub: command not found
mybox boot #
mybox boot # ls /boot
System.map-3.16.5-gentoo  config-3.16.5-gentoo  lost+found  vmlinuz-3.16.5-gentoo
mybox boot # grub-install
bash: grub-install: command not found

Here is my emerge --info

Code:
mybox boot # emerge --info

Assuming GRUB is installed at the default version, the commands are probably named grub2*, not grub*.

Just following the directions.....

Configuring the Bootloader

Emerge grub and configure it. Do not forget to update the necessary boot parameters if you are using an initramfs.

Code Listing 2.29: Emerge grub and edit its configuration file
livecd conf.d # time emerge grub

real 1m4.634s
user 0m39.460s
sys 0m15.280s
livecd conf.d # nano -w /boot/grub/grub.conf
Code Listing 2.30: Example grub.conf
default 0
timeout 10

title Gentoo
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/kernel root=/dev/sda3
initrd /boot/initramfs # Only when initramfs is needed like with separate /usr partition
Code Listing 2.31: Install grub
livecd conf.d # grub
Probing devices to guess BIOS drives. This may take a long time.

grub> root (hd0,0)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0xfd

grub> setup (hd0)
Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists... yes
Checking if "/boot/grub/stage2" exists... yes
Checking if "/boot/grub/e2fs_stage1_5" exists... yes
Running "embed /boot/grub/e2fs_stage1_5 (hd0)"... 16 sectors are embedded.
succeeded
Running "install /boot/grub/stage1 (hd0) (hd0)1+16 p (hd0,0)/boot/grub/stage2 /boot/
grub/menu.lst"... succeeded
Done.

grub> quit

I'm not sure which directions you are following, but that's a setup for GRUB Legacy. The default version in gentoo is GRUB2.

Please see here for basic setup instructions: https://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-amd64.xml?part=1&chap=10#doc_chap2

Please see here for a more comprehensive description: http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/GRUB2
