Hey guys,
I've a small problem with installing Gentoo on my new notebook ThinkPad E540. I'd like use full UEFI, so I turned off in BIOS option: "UEFI Secure Boot". In tab "Startup" I set up "UEFI Only" and "CSM Support" to value No.

I followed install instructions by handbook, for preparation UEFI boot I used this install guide. I prepared USB stick and boot from. Load kernel module efivars, install new option to EFI manager. After reset, I see my boot item in manager, but if choose it, Gentoo doesn't boot - no kernel panic, no message, for 1 second is screen black and then show boot manager again.

Internal SSD is GPT with with partitions:

  • /dev/sda1 is 500m in FAT32, mounted as /boot
  • /dev/sda2 is SWAP
  • /dev/sda3 is root FS

Can you help me someone? Thanks for advice[/list]

Also I tried rename EFI boot manager item to "Windows Boot Manager" and "Red Hat Enterprise Linux" - without success... It's little strange, because from USB notebook boot correctly

I dont use efibootmgr or grub at all.
Just select UEFI OS for Harddrive 1 in the BIOS and Im done.
Of course you can go for efibootmgr create custom string and risk a typo...doubelcheck that ;-)

Did you enable CONFIG_VFAT_FS, CONFIG_EFI_VARS, CONFIG_EFI_STUB ?

notebook has replaced HDD by SSD. I remove by efibootmgr all EFI boot options, add my Gentoo option and reboot. Bios detect wrong boot manager and recover it. Now it works as you wrote - without any EFI boot manager. I set up boot from SSD and choose UEFI OS
