Hi,

I know, this is an antiquity but, anyway, I've put it in one of my box ... unfortunately, I'm suffering for some issue :


  • windows needing to be refreshed (for example when I move another windows on top of them), the dirty area get corrupted.
  • GTK's icons are not always correctly displayed. For example, the entire area of GIMP's tools icons windows get corrupted
  • idem with tabs of Firefox.
  • ...


On the other hand, videos are correctly displayed and accelerated.

Hi,

I think you currently only have 2D acceleration working through EXA, which is sub optimal and perhaps buggy. 3D hardware acceleration used to work with Rage128 through the mesa package, but support has been dropped for older hardware since media-libs/mesa-8.0.

Maybe it's still possible to install the older versions, but you'll have to mask quite a few packages for that. See this post. With mesa you'll have probably AGP 4x (check settings in BIOS), and `Page flipping' can be enabled in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/. Further I would disable `Backing store' to save some memory.

Thanks for your response.

As this machine is very old (15 year / old), I'm trying some stuffs before recompiling MESA.

Forcing the display to 16bits mode made a big performances boost : graphical stuffs are now usable :D

The only remaining issue is screen corruption ...

It's fun to keep such a machine alive. :)

Maybe disabling Compositing also helps... I found this in my file cruft:

It's far better : now windows are correctly refreshed, yeah ! :)
The last problem is some glitches and dots on windows.
For example, when I'm displayed some texts in Firefox.

Yeap : and it is not my older which are a 1986's stamped Amiga 1000 and a Sharp PC-1401 pocket from 1984.

But this Athlon is still usable : it's my development environment as having lot of connectors and cards inside (firewire, SCSI, ...), lot of USB and 2 serial ports. Ideal for hacking :twisted:
Obviously, compilations are deported on faster machines.

In the past I used Opera, because I found it working more smoothly than big Firefox. Don't know the current state of Opera after they dropped Presto (that's where I quit). Firefox might use acceleration or double buffering, that cause the clinches. Maybe there's some option with `about:config' in the location bar to turn it off?

I still have a Compaq Deskpro 2000 (Pentium 133MHz/32MB RAM/2MB Video card), with a DSL image on it. It's from the early 90's. A few years ago I tried Gentoo on it for fun. Also have a Athlon550MHz/320MB RAM. In that one I have the Rage128 card with 16MB video mem. These machines are currently only collecting dust. But I won't send them to the garbage dump!!!! :P

EXA's designed around an assumption that VRAM is random-access, but AGP behaves more like write-only memory.

Telling X to keep things in main memory might speed it up a lot, maybe even fix the corruption. You may be better off using UXA if it's still there...
