Hi,
I got used spare desktop with some not bad HW. I decide let's try some more advanced setup than handbook one. On board I have 4 disks:
[*](sda) 120 GB SSD
[*](sdb) 1 TB HDD
[*](sdc) 500 GB HDD
[*](sdd) 150 GB HDD on USB2

What is obvious sdd (not part of game) with be mounted somewhere in system just for spare storage for not crusial data or ebuilds testing.

The question is how to split disks to do best/secure/funky setup.

I thing about software raid1 but I don't have same size HDD, I heard than lvm2 can do take 2 different disk make kind of raid1 and of course do what lvm2 do so flexible partitions, right?

But how to take advance of SSD in this picture? Use only for boot and bcache or some dirs like /usr etc or what?

Another tricky point I would like to have dual boot with windows7, so windows take 2 partition to boot, and rest with be on some partition on sdb.

My starting idea is:

sda - separate partition for: win_boot (rescue partirion), win_c_drv, /boot and bcache
sdb - separate partition for: win_d_drv, swap and LVM (root, usr, home(luks) etc)
sdc - LVM (root, usr, home(luks) etc)
sdd - brtfs (this out of topic but heard its good to test and try ebuilds under development (with chroot))

Any idea, for my is most important how to setup lvm acros disks to be kind of raid1

And how it would like without windows partiotion?

Last question for LVM I thing of etx4 but what about SSD (brtfs, JFS, XFS, F2fs or ext4)

comments are welcome.....

The SSD is quite large enough for a full install and the most essential files for your /home. I have the same on a 64G SSD. You could use the HDD for larger stuff (like movies or whatever).

As for RAID1, you could put 500GB in RAID1 mode, and use the remaining 500GB of the 1TB HDD for something else.

LVM won't be able to give you more than 500GB of redundant data either.

I've not much experience with SSD as a cache device. I just put everything that needs to be fast onto SSD directly, and the clunky stuff on HDD. Though I guess SSD cache is useful if you don't want to worry about the what's-where.
