Hello.
I have the same issue. Cannot mount root. invalid argument.
When i go to the shell and looking over /proc/filesystems i do not see ext4.
The thing is, two weeks ago that configuration was ok booting!
I left the system and when i boot up today i cannot mount root.
I have e2fsck the root partition and there were errors fixed.
But it did not help.
If it is really the missing ext4 in the kernel, why it is missing after 2weeks of shutdown?
Before it was booting nice.

Edit: Split from the 10-year-old (and unrelated) Mounting /dev/hda5 on /newroot failed: Invalid argument ! as this was just too much necromancy for me. — JRG
