Hi,

Following the handbook, I've installed a machine and when I restart,
It first shows the Grub menu.
Then when the kernel loads, I see some kernel messages indicating a normal boot (as far as I can tell).
Then right about at the moment when the user-land loads, the screen clears and then nothing is shown again.

Since I can't see anything, it's difficult to know what is going on.

But it does not respond to CTRL+ALT+F1 or CTRL+ALT+DEL

It appears locked-up.

Some info: I have not installed X or any graphical environment yet, so I don't think it is trying to start X.

Here's the system's info, taken from lspci when booted from the livecd:

Hi,

It sounds like a KMS or framebuffer issue to me. Have you tried disabling KMS? Try booting up with the "nomodeset" kernel parameter, and see what happens.

Cheers!

Thanks, PeGa!

That's what it was! At least partly.

I had both FB_UVESA and FB_VESA set in the kernel config and this made the screen blank.

Once that was cleared up, the system was still hung because Grub2 was trying to mount the wrong partition???

It seems that every time I let the Grub installer generate it's initial configuration file, I always need to change whatever UUID it selected as the root partition and set it to the device name (ex. /dev/sda4)

Thank you very kindly for the help!
