was using genkernel-next but decided i would move to gentoo-sources and upgrade at the same time

at first the new kernel would hard lock and not respond to reisub but after changing root to /dev/sda3 instead of UUID it booted but with errors.

old kernel boots with initramfs and UUID, new kernel has no initramfs (no disk encryption or raid)
grub line is
linux /vmlinuz-3.17.7-gentoo root=UUID=70fe39eb-f27a-44ed-8919-c2e9c285ce2d ro init=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd
but that seems to spinlock so i edit it to say:
root=/dev/sda3
which gives the errors linked below

emerge --info
kernel.config-3.12.3-gentoo
kernel.config-3.17.7-gentoo
ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid/
dmesg | grep -i fail
dmesg

i run udev systemd gnome in a duel boot environment. the bios boots the second HD which has grub, grub can chain load to the first HD for windows 7. from windows i can have vmware boot the second physical drive. the old kernel's work great in both vmware and outside of it. i have been building 2 kernels, one for each environment to keep things cleaner.

[EDIT]
added a bunch of kernel modules and now its all good. will diff the config and find out what was missing.
