Trying to get the clickpad right-click etc. going in my DE but nothing seems to work (a generic USB mouse works all fine and clickety). I have tried the xorg.conf.d bits mentioned in http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Installing_Gentoo_on_an_X240 and http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Buttonless_Touchpad but neither seem to change the pad's behaviour. Am I missing something, what else should I check?

Wow, that's got to be annoying; I actually picked up last years T430s model over a T440 largely because of the changes Lenovo has made to the touchpad (i.e. removal of the buttons on top). Anyways, are you using xf86-input-synaptics? Maybe check out http://who-t.blogspot.com/2014/03/xorg-synaptics-support-for-lenovo-t440.html.

EDIT: Actually, this is probably where you need to look: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-833298-start-0.html; you may need to patch synaptics.

I have INPUT_DEVICES="mouse keyboard evdev synaptics" in my make.conf. I've had a quick look at both the links you posted and it seems a lot of futzing about to get the soft-buttons working; I'm not confident about patching things like they seem to suggest 8O

Actually, adding a patch to an ebuild is fairly simple in Gentoo. The process is basically:
1. Create a local overlay
2. Copy the ebuild you want to patch to the overlay
3. Add the patch to the files directory
4. Update the ebuild to see the patch
5. 'digest' the updated ebuild
6. emerge

At the very least, you may want to try patch even if you don't do it through portage. Also note that the other "40" models of Lenovo Thinkpads (i.e. T440, T540, etc.) also have the same issue so I'd expect it will resolve itself soon. Maybe check bugzilla if there's a request to add the patch to the standard ebuild (and if not, submit a bug!).
