i recently "upgraded" my system and now it looks like pam is a bit mesed up. i guess i didn't even realize that i was using pam, it's just a workstation.

i'm able to boot to a usb gentoo thumb drive and chroot into the system ok. when i sudo to another user in that system, i see the similar messages i get on boot. here's the pastebin. any help is appreciated.

mlybarger ...

can you provide the output of 'emerge --info =sys-libs/pam-1.1.8-r2::gentoo'. It might also help if we had some idea of what was updated (so 'qlop -l' ... and post the section with date matching the update). I assume that subsequent to the update you ran 'etc-update', 'revdep-rebuild' or '@preserved-rebuild' ... basically, is the install consistant and was this update a regular one or has your install been languishing?

Code:
sys-libs/pam-1.1.8-r2 was built with the following:
USE="berkdb cracklib debug nls -audit -nis (-selinux) -test -vim-syntax" ABI_X86="64 -32 -x32"

mlybarger ... disable the 'debug' useflag (which I assume you've set globally) and rebuild sys-libs/pam-1.1.8-r2.

mlybarger ... ok, good. You might want to edit the first post and add '[SOLVED]' to the subject line.
