Hi to all,

Whenever I install the gentoo (not regular gentoo a customized one! I dont know exactly) on any machine, I see ntpd service is not running automatically.

MY precise problem is:

I type the command ntpdate -q hostname and I receive the below message:

server xxx..xxx..xx..xx, stratum 0, offset 0.000000, delay 0.00000
17 Feb 15:42:17 ntpdate[10999]: no server suitable for synchronization found

When I type the command to check the services running in my gentoo (rc-status --all), I can only see ntp-client is running and not ntpd.
so I'm manually running the command rc-service ntpd start to start the services of ntpd.

After the services started, I can see values in stratum , offset, delay etc.

Now if I add rc-update add ntpd default, it will add ntpd to the runlevel and if I reboot the gentoo it will start ntpd automatically.

But if I install gentoo again from beginning, the ntpd service is not started automatically. So how can I change the gentoo installer files/folders to bring back ntpd to start automatically ?
I'm new to gentoo and I request you all to give more detailed information on this.

Thanks.

The NTP daemon isn't special in this respect. With Gentoo, nothing is installed automatically! This
Code:
rc-update add ntpd default
is just part of the Gentoo install process if you want the NTP daemon to run automatically. You shouldn't expect setting you make to survive if you "install again from the beginning" because "from the beginning" means that there's nothing there.

You've just got to do it. ;)

yagamiram,

Welcome to Gentoo.

You have just discovered that Gentoo gives you two things.
1 - The packages you ask for
2 - The packages required to support the packages you ask for.

It follows that if you have not asked, its not installed, whatever 'it' is.

             bootmisc | boot
                cupsd |      default
                dcron |      default
                devfs |                       sysinit

             hostname | boot
              hwclock | boot
              keymaps | boot
            killprocs |              shutdown
                local |      default
           localmount | boot
             loopback | boot
              metalog |      default
              modules | boot
             mount-ro |              shutdown
                 mtab | boot
             net.eth0 |      default
               net.lo | boot
             netmount |      default
           ntp-client |      default
                 ntpd |      default
               procfs | boot
                 root | boot
            savecache |              shutdown
                 sshd |      default
                 swap | boot
            swapfiles | boot
               sysctl | boot
                sysfs |                       sysinit
         termencoding | boot
         tmpfiles.dev |                       sysinit
       tmpfiles.setup | boot
              urandom | boot
nothing in the default runlevel will be running.
