I've got a ThinkPad Helix, which I have been running Linux on for a while, and I'm trying to install Gentoo on it. However, after the keymap prompt, I get this:

Code:

The laptop doesn't have an internal CD drive. I've tried two different external CD drives, as well as writing the install CD image to a flash drive. All had the same result. I've tried the "slowusb" and "scandelay" options to the kernel, but those didn't help, either. Any ideas?

This is what you want to boot to install Gentoo.

This looks rather similar to a problem that I've encountered (https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1011806.html). Have you tried unplugging and replugging your external HDD or USB before selecting the key-map in the boot stage (worked for me)? Hope this helps. :)

I had previously tried re-plugging the drive when it prompted for the block device to no avail. I just tried doing it before entering the keymap, and that didn't work either.

I'm able to get SystemRescueCD to boot, but wpa_supplicant is broken on it, which I need. (I can't figure out how to configure it for my setup, and for some reason it won't die when killed; so, I have to reboot to try a new configuration, which is quite annoying.)

So you've tried the unplug/replug thing on your devices already? And your wireless isn't working? Sorry, I'm at a loss here (seems like your problem is something a little harder to solve than mine). Good-luck. And hopefully you'll find someone with more experience here than me.

did you boot the sysresccd all the way to the xfce4 GUI and use networkmanager (icon lower right of desktop) to configure the network?

even though sysresccd supports almost every linux wireless driver, not every windows wireless adapter has a linux driver
does ifconfig -a show a wireless interface with a driver?
does ifconfig show a wireless interface that is up?
what does lspci -k tell you about the wireless nic?

I wasn't aware SysRescCD had NetworkManager. I know the wireless works fine with NetworkManager under openSUSE. I guess I can cheat just to bootstrap the system then figure something out to get connected between then and when I get around to installing X.

Just use the networkmanager provided by sysresccd to do the install; no cheating involved. While in the chroot, before the first reboot, configure your preferred mode of networking (see the gentoo wiki and the handbook); be it dhcpcd, wicd, networkmanager, or the gentoo netscripts. networkmanager and wicd do have CLI's.
