I've always followed the Gentoo X86 handbook, and linked the /etc/init.d/net.lo to
the boot runlevel and /etc/init.d/eth0 to the default runlevel. However, trying to
debug a stray message on a current Gentoo install I've discovered that both net.lo
and net.eth0 start and configure without being explicitly linked to any runlevel at
all; and without the unwanted message.

Is this a change in OpenRC, or is it just a matter of the way networking dependencies
are set up?

Thanks - Will

Why? I've never seen net.lo to be added to a runlevel.

There is "loopback" service that configures lo, it replaces net.lo. Unless you use netifrc, in which case you use net.lo anyway linking network devices to it.

Before loopback starting net.lo was a good idea for it did not provide net (and wouldn't be started by net-related services) but it often still was needed by local stuff, which obviously wouldn't start it either.
Eth0 does provide net (unless you disabled it manually), so it will be started before any service that needs it. Like ssh or nfs.
It still should print a message when it starts.

Thanks - it looks as if the loopback service is the bit I missed. The handbook
now mentions net.eth0, and _not_ net.lo - I didn't notice that change.
