Hi.

I used to work with Gentoo quite a lot, but it has admittedly been quite a while. I was going through a gentoo install under VirtualBox using the install-x86-minimal-20150324.iso and the stage3-i686-20150324.tar.bz2, following the handbook for x86, when, after mounting proc, sys, and dev and trying to chroot into the system to continue the install, I received a rather perplexing error.

Code:

livecd gentoo # chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash
Illegal instruction

Now, I've seen this before with mismatched architectures but the system is a 32-bit VM, the ISO is i686, and the stage is i686, so... I don't know quite what's going on?

Anybody shed any light here?

NOTE: The reason I'm using a 32-bit VM is the host system, while 64-bit, does not support VT-x so VirtualBox will not allow me to create a 64-bit VM.

insidious611,

Your host does not suppert the 32 bit instruction that it tred te execute on behalf of your virtualbox guest..

install-x86-minimal-20150324.iso will run on a 486. There is a i686 version too. The stage3 looks OK.

Try using System Rescue CD to install. Take care to boot a 32 bit kernel.

Hmm, it's a Core 2 Quad, there's no reason it shouldn't be able to execute any valid i686 instruction.

EDIT: Huh, booting from SystemRescueCD worked! I was able to successfully chroot into the exact same partition that I wasn't able to chroot into before. How odd. Well, thanks!
