Hello all,

Ok, I think I have my kernel updated to use the proper megaraid drivers.

I did a make && make modules_install

Then
make install

This seemed to do just fine.

I then figured to redo grub2 to set it up to use the new kernel.

I ran:

Code:
(chroot) livecd linux # grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
Generating grub configuration file ...
Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-3.18.11-gentoo
Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-3.18.11-gentoo.old
done

So, the old kernel that didn't work is there...along with the new. Looking at the /boot directory I have:

Code:
(chroot) livecd linux # ls -l /boot
total 17100
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root   93594 Apr 23 02:46 config-3.18.11-gentoo
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root   93547 Apr 21 11:28 config-3.18.11-gentoo.old
drwxr-xr-x 5 root root    1024 Apr 23 02:48 grub
drwx------ 2 root root   12288 Apr 20 10:59 lost+found
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3020578 Apr 23 02:46 System.map-3.18.11-gentoo
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3018862 Apr 21 11:28 System.map-3.18.11-gentoo.old
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 5595104 Apr 23 02:46 vmlinuz-3.18.11-gentoo
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 5596672 Apr 21 11:28 vmlinuz-3.18.11-gentoo.old

Just wondering for housecleaning to keep things neat...would the proper thing be to go into /boot and remove

rm config-3.18.11-gentoo.old System.map-3.18.11-gentoo.old vmlinuz-3.18.11-gentoo.old

And at that point rerun the command:
grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

This grub2 is new to me, so just making sure I'm doing the right steps to fully clean out bad kernel attempts.

Thank you,

cayenne

What you suggest is fine, once you know the new kernel will boot. "make install" creates these backups so you'll still have something bootable left around as you make changes.
