I've got an error installing Gentoo, actually I have more errors before but finally fixed them by googling, I'm unable to find my problem. I'm trying to merge world as > emerge --update --newuse --deep @world

I've already tried --depclean but got gcc emerge error ..

Code:

bia-dell ~ # emerge --update --newuse --deep @world

suggest changing /etc/portage/make.conf entries for cflags and cxxflags to those suggested in the handbook:
Quote:
Example CFLAGS and CXXFLAGS variables
CFLAGS="-march=native -O2 -pipe"
# Use the same settings for both variables
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
I can't convince myself that -march=i686 -mtune=generic exist.

Then as install progress permits, either reboot or reboot the livemedia, mount the gentoo partitions, enter the chroot run
Code:
emerge wgetpaste
. If that works, retry
Code:
emerge --update --newuse --deep @world
if that fails, run:
Code:
emerge --update --newuse --deep @world | wgetpaste -t
post the url returned so the readers can see the whole output.

I think, 101 packages is so many to emerge at once.
Very basic packages (such as portage, gcc, etc.) should be emerged first.
With "--pretend --verbose --tree" option, emerge outputs the list of packages to build. It can be useful to decide which packages should be emerged first. ("emerge -upvtDN @world" will outputs the list of 101 packages.)

Also, you can emerge with "--keep-going" option to continue emerging other packages.
(It'll prevent emerge stopping on the build failure of x264.)

The idea to run emerge @world is to get up to date, can't do it with outdated tree ...

Thanks for reply Donahue, I've tried as you said, changed make.conf and run all commands, still got errors, here is link as you mentioned:
https://bpaste.net/show/5cfe69a708c6

A brief history: This is my first install of Gentoo, I've run it from Kubuntu live USB, got chroot and partitioned HDD, basically following Gentoo handbook, then reboot and got grub error, fixed that, reboot again, was no network, fixed it and here is my emerge problem. Ah.. and I've tried to fix this x264 error myself before posting here but got another error with emerging gcc :( ...

I'll try --keep-going option now, thanks wjn.

Upd: After --keep-alive option many packages where installed but some still left and two commands gives two different results 18 or 57
Upd: My latest full emerge output here: https://bpaste.net/show/7db31d2d5bef

Code:

bia-dell ~ # emerge -upvtDN @world

These are the packages that would be merged, in reverse order:

It appears the cflags problem is cleared only to run into a recurrence/reversion of a known problem: https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=490276

let an emerge --keep-going -auND @world run, watch for reason any package other than media-libs/x-264 fails.

This happens build process is hanged up by some reasons such as memory exhaust.

Does this happen when you emerge only gcc? (# emerge -u sys-devel/gcc )
If so, try decreasing jobs also. ( # emerge -u --jobs 1 sys-devel/gcc )

By the way, your portage tree is probably out of date.
gcc-4.8.4 is the newest stable package now.
You can "emerge --sync" if you want.

It segfaulted, possible bad RAM.
I already mentioned before the tree is out of date, but OP seems want to build Gentoo version from March 31st. That's OK, people do weird things all the time.
Furthermore, it seems 32-bit starts suffering from small userbase, everybody is running 64-bit, as a result it is better tested and debugged. There are more recent threads here with weird stuff happening on 32-bit installs.

are any or all of the other 17 packages also segfaulting?
Quote:
KiB Mem: 3280152 total, 1201172 free
KiB Swap: 4194300 total, 4194300 free
3gig ram and 4gig swap should be enough but adding some more swap is a way to eliminate thinking about that problem.
Reducing jobs reduces stress on processor and memory. This is simply done as suggested for just gcc or in make.conf for every package. Also reduces the probability of threading errors.
Code:
emerge --sync
will make Jaglover happier. the most common cause of segfaults is memory failure as Jaglover stated memtest86, memtest86+, and memtester are in portage. Running one or more from the livemedia or from the chroot might find a memory problem. Memory fault probability increases with temperture, cleaning memory and cpu and associated ventilation with or without disassembly recommended.

For media-libs/x264, suggest try the bug fix patch:
/etc/portage/package.env may be a directory or a file and still be parsed by portage.
Code:
ls -al /etc/portage/package.env

If it is a directory and is empty and you wish it to be a file
Code:
rmdir /etc/portage/package.env

If it is a file and is empty and you wish it to be a directory
Code:
rm /etc/portage/package.env

If /etc/portage/package.env is not empty and a format change is desired the current content will need to be converted to the new format.
If /etc/portage/package.env does not exist and you wish it to be a directory, create file /etc/portage/package.env/media-libs/x264 in it containing "media-libs/x264 Os-fomit-frame-pointer-cflags" as follows:
Code:
mkdir -p /etc/portage/package.env/media-libs
echo "media-libs/x264 Os-fomit-frame-pointer-cflags" >> /etc/portage/package.env/media-libs/x264

If /etc/portage/package.env does not exist and you wish it to be a file, create file /etc/portage/package.env containing "media-libs/x264 Os-fomit-frame-pointer-cflags" as follows:
Code:
mkdir -p /etc/portage/package.env
echo "media-libs/x264 Os-fomit-frame-pointer-cflags" >> /etc/portage/package.env

Then create the file /etc/portage/env/Os-fomit-frame-pointer-cflags containing 'CFLAGS="-Os -falign-functions -falign-jumps -falign-loops -falign-labels -freorder-blocks -freorder-blocks-and-partition -ftree-vect-loop-version -march=native -fomit-frame-pointer -fno-stack-protector -nopie -pipe"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}" ' as follows
Code:
mkdir -p /etc/portage/env
echo -e 'CFLAGS="-Os -falign-functions -falign-jumps -falign-loops -falign-labels -freorder-blocks -freorder-blocks-and-partition -ftree-vect-loop-version -march=native -fomit-frame-pointer -fno-stack-protector -nopie -pipe" \nCXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"' >> /etc/portage/env/Os-fomit-frame-pointer-cflags

Thanks again Donahue, I've used your link https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=490276 and see you have posted bugfix here too, it fixed my problem with x264 package, I still have GCC error, but do not have time to fix it right now and I'll use --sync, I'm trying to build gentoo on my second PC and doing it when I have time, this why it became outdated ... anyway thanks guys for all your help, I'll mark this post as fixed, as initial problem has gone and will create new post if I still have issue with another packages. I've use advice from gentoo handbook and setup 3 threads on 2 core pocessors, maybe this is a problem when you talking about memory segmentation ... maybe not anyway this will be potential discussion in different thread. Thanks everyone.
