emerge --ask whatever
!!! SYNC setting found in make.conf.
This setting is Deprecated and no longer used. Please ensure your 'sync-type' and 'sync-uri' are set correctly in /etc/portage/repos.conf/gentoo.conf

what is "correctly"?

should I take "SYNC" out of make.conf?

It should have been auto migrated and yes.

Code:

nano -w /etc/portage/repos.conf/gentoo.conf

ends up with a new file, same with
/etc/portage/repos.conf
/etc/portage/gentoo.conf

SYNC="rsync://rsync6.us.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"
is in my /etc/portage/make.conf file

should I still remove the SYNC?
will the empty files work?

Dale__,

Code:
nano -w /etc/portage/repos.conf/gentoo.conf

Should show something like
Code:
[DEFAULT]
main-repo = gentoo

[gentoo]
location = /usr/portage
sync-type = rsync
sync-uri = rsync://192.168.10.119/gentoo-portage
auto-sync = yes

That sync-uri won't work for you.

Do you have an etc-update to do?

I did a handbook AMD64 install, with network,, xorg, KDE

Ii had to do
Code:

eselect news read

during the install, and at some point after, maybe my first system wide update which I did twice

also did the following a couple times, and tried it before the first code above
Code:

dispatch-conf

there might have been another command that was update related, I know I should be documenting these things along the way, I have some written down and some in text files

So, is the problem solved?

Because I am having the same issue as well.

Suddenly that message popped on my terminal.

I am installing Gentoo and at the step of Kernel downloading.

Thanks,

PC,

Dale__ and chiqui.paula,

Just delete the SYNC= line from your make.conf file and read https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Project:Portage/Sync#Portage_configuration.
