genkernel --menuconfig all
cd /usr/src/linux;make menuconfig
either will use the existing genkernel configuration file as a base while allowing you to eliminate unneeded items and to convert some items selected as modules to built in. using genkernel will continue to generate an initrd.
in menuconfig, entering / gives access to a rudimentary search function
emerging lshw and running lshw | grep -i driver will provide a list of drivers in use
cat /proc/cpuinfo provides a list of cpu characteristics

http://kernel-seeds.org/seeds/64_bit/gentoo/3.9.9-gentoo-x86_64-08.config is a link to the last stripped down configuration produced by the now retired pappy_mcfae. The usual default configuration reflects the machine and preferences of the kernel dev. The genkernel configuration is generic, least common denominator, enables modules for almost everything hoping the kernel will choose enough correct modules to run. You can download that old 3.9.9 kernel as /usr/src/linux/.config, update it using make oldconfig, and add drivers to it for your machine using make menuconfig. The end result will be a lean kernel adapted to your needs and preferences. http://kernel-seeds.org/settings-00.html and http://kernel-seeds.org/working.html provide good advice to the configuror of a kernel.
