Hi,

I am installing the gentoo to a usb disk. But the kernel of linux-3.18.12-gentoo seems not to support rootwait or rootdelay. I used the genkernel to build the kernel. I have supplied the "root=/dev/sdc6" and "rootwait" in the kernel parameters in the grub kernel line. Every time I boot the system, it stops somewhere asking about the root device, when I type the same "/dev/sdc6" as in the kernel para , it boots up to the system correctly.

It seems that the "rootwait" parameter does not take effect. Why?

Thanks.

XiaoaiX,

Welcome to Gentoo.

As you use genkernel, you actually have two root filesystems.
First, the initrd is used as the root filesystem, after this has done its thing, /dev/sdc6 is used as the root filesystem.

rootwait and rootdelay apply to the first root filesystem (the initrd) being mounted, which is not what you want.
Thats the why.

What to do about it ...
Make a kernel that can boot without an initrd. Then rootwait and rootdelay will work as you expect.
You could also edit the initrd init script to include the delay that you need.
